Arrow Quilting is taking an "intermission" this April! I’m switching up my power tools for a few weeks to finish up some DIY projects around the house.

When we downsized 5 years ago, the home improvement projects got started, but not all got finished.....cuz...a forest fire took out our cabin, which diverted all our energy and time away from our home. Now that the cabin is all done (and looking fantastic!), it's time to re-focus on projects here at home.

One of the projects on the list includes kitting up my quilting studio to be even more efficient (and prettier....and finished).

I’m so excited to get back to your beautiful quilts in May with a fresh, optimized space. Should I share some of the transformation in my Stories? Let me know!

🏹 A Little "Me-Time" on the Frame
As a longarmer, my own quilt tops often take a back burner while I make sure your beautiful projects are finished and out the door. But at the end of every year, I set aside two weeks in December to enjoy the holiday season and often find myself spending time "catching up" on my own WIPs.

I finally got my Jour Polaire quilt (the stunning modern design by Claire of @namaju_quiltstudio) onto the longarm. I absolutely love the clean, modern vibe of this pattern, but since it’s headed for the cabin, I wanted to infuse it with a little bit of "cozy." ❄️🌲

I decided on the Simple Cable pantograph (a @longarmleague favourite), but here is the secret: I loaded the quilt sideways. Many digital designs are non-directional. I make sure to also have lots of directional designs, including those for quilts intended to be loaded sideways. By rotating the quilt, the cable knit runs perfectly from the top of the quilt to the bottom, mimicking the look of a giant, comfy hand-knit sweater. It’s the perfect blend of modern lines and cabin comfort!

It feels so good to have this one "almost" done (I still need to bind it!). It’s a gentle reminder to myself that while I love finishing quilts for all of you, my own projects need to cross the finish line, too.

For this week’s #LongarmLeagueMyLongarm prompt, I’m introducing you to the powerhouse of my studio: my Handi Quilter Infinity, affectionately known as "Finn."

I brought Finn home six years ago, and he is a total beast! Together, we have seen well over 1,000 quilts pass over these rollers.

I actually started out free-motion quilting, but within six months, I added the ProStitcher system and haven’t looked back. People often assume that computer does all the work, but I like to say that while Finn provides the muscle, I provide the magic. 🪄

Finn is a machine that runs on a 12 foot table, but the artistry comes from the human touch behind him. It's up to me to:

Handle the complex loading and squaring of the quilt.
Carefully select the perfect design and thread colour.
Manage the scale, rotation, and placement so the panto flows perfectly over your piecing.
Monitor every single stitch to ensure Finn is performing at his best.
Keep Finn in tip top shape with daily care and cleaning.

Adding the technology didn't just make me more productive; it made me more creative. It allowed me to focus on the design journey of every project in a whole new way.

Six years and 1,000+ quilts later, Finn and I have no plans of stopping. We love being the team that helps you cross the finish line, because a perfect quilt is a finished quilt.

🐷 Barnyard Bliss with a Modern Twist 🐄
There is nothing quite like an Elizabeth Hartman quilt to brighten up the studio!

Ella brought in her Fab Farm quilt, and to say I’m obsessed would be an understatement. Between the strutting chickens and the adorable pigs, this quilt is a masterclass in piecing and personality.

One of the things I love most about my work is the trust my customers place in me. Most of the time, folks come in with a "vibe" or a feeling and let me run with the design (a part of the job I secretly—or not so secretly—absolutely love!).

Ella, however, came in with a very specific vision for her farm family. #organicspanto by @thequiltingmill was such a golden choice to achieve a modern but natural "farmhouse" energy. It was just a matter of us finding the perfect scale to make it shine! The flowing, soft lines give the quilt incredible movement and that "organic" feel, without competing with the intricate animal blocks.

Seeing her face light up when she came to pick it up? That’s the best part of this business. Helping a vision come to life is what it’s all about!

🏹 More Than Just Fabric: The Story of a Favourite Quilt
When I’m asked, "What is your favourite quilt?" my answer usually changes based on what is currently under my needle or which one I am currently using to cuddle under. My "fave quilt" answer changes a LOT. But if I’m being honest, I have two that hold the most space in my heart. The first one is the quilt that my mum made us as a wedding gift and the second is this Revenir/Partir quilt.

This quilt was born out of the ashes—literally. After we lost our cabin to a forest fire, we entered a season of making plans on how to rebuild "Cabin 2.0". During that time, my friend Claire (@namaju_quiltstudio) was preparing to release this pattern.

The name, which translates to "Return/Depart," felt like a sign. The geometric design can be flipped towards or away from each other, depending on your preference, but for me, the focus was entirely on returning. It represented our little community rallying together, and the hope of new beginnings. I knew immediately that this had to be the very first quilt to lay on a bed in our new cabin. 🌲✨

In these photos, you’ll see the Revenir/Partir in its place of honour, along with a scrappy companion I made using the "leftovers"—bits of this story and others stitched together.

Quilts are so much more than blankets; they are the records of where we’ve been and the warmth we carry forward. I’m so grateful to have this piece as a reminder that no matter what we leave behind, we always find a way to rebuild what matters.

📐 Linear Perfection with a Twist ❄️
Lorraine is back at it again with another stunning finish! This time, she brought in her Winter Visit quilt—a gorgeous design by @krista_moser that she picked up as a kit from our friends over at @aroundtheblock.

Lorraine has been loving the look of straight-line quilting lately, and wanted to give this one a little extra "something" without distracting from her beautiful piecing. Using #paralleldiamondpanto , by It’s a Quilt Thing, gives it that perfect magical touch. ✨

The subtle shift in those linear lines creates incredible texture and visual interest, perfectly complementing the sharp angles of the quilt. It’s a great reminder that you don’t always need swirls or feathers to make a quilt pop—sometimes, the right geometric lines are all you need!

It was such a joy to have this one on the frame. Now it’s ready to go home and get cozy, because as we always say... a perfect quilt is a finished quilt. 🏹

Pam requested a quilting design that felt fun and whimsical to match the energy of her piecing. #citrinepanto was the perfect fit! The flowing, bubbly lines of the pantograph add just the right amount of "bounce" to those crisp rectangles.

I love seeing a project come together like this—where the fabric, the pattern, and the quilting all speak the same language. Now this beauty is ready to head home, get bound, and get used!

What’s in a Name? The Story Behind Arrow Quilting 🏹
If I’m being completely honest, the name Arrow Quilting started with a very practical thought: I wanted a name that started with "A." Why? So I’d always be near the top of an alphabetical list of peers! Simple, right?

But then, a series of events occurred that "pointed" me in a much deeper direction.

At the time, I was navigating the early, challenging stages of my mum’s dementia. A dear friend gave me some simple advice: "Just follow your arrow." That weekend, driving to the cabin, while we were all tossing around business names and having a laugh, Kacey Musgraves came on the radio singing, "Follow Your Arrow." That line—"You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't, so you might as well do whatever you want"—really struck a chord. I started to wonder... Arrow?

Then, a childhood memory surfaced. I remembered a poem, The Arrow and the Song, but I couldn't recall all the words. It starts with "I shot an arrow into the air, it fell to earth, I know not where..." That’s when the magic happened. Despite her dementia, Mum piped up and filled in the verses I’d forgotten. Her long-term memory was still so sharp! We looked up the poet, and it was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The arrow had landed.

In our family, that name means everything. I have several very old, and very worn out books with his poems, passed down from mum. Longfellow wrote The Day is Done, the very poem Mum often recited to us at bedtime. To this day, I can still recite the whole thing by heart.

In that moment, driving to the cabin, with Mum’s voice filling in the blanks, Arrow Quilting was born. It’s more than just a name at the top of the list; it’s a reminder to follow my heart, honour my roots, and keep "pointing" toward the things that matter most.

Whether I’m finishing a quilt for you or working on a project of my own, I promise it’s a service where a lot of heart goes into every stitch.

🚨 Breaking News: Longarmer Spotted Using a Domestic Machine! 🚨
Stop the presses. Check the thermostat in the afterlife (it hasn't frozen). You are seeing this correctly.

This weekend, I am stepping away from the longarm and going "old school." I’ve got my 1600 Triangle Quilt loaded—not on my big frame—but under the needle of my domestic machine!

Say what?! 😱

I know, I know. Why would I choose the "scrunch and shove" method when I have a professional longarm waiting in the wings?

The answer: I've been playing wingman in a "Learn to Quilt" class at Around the Block Quilt Shop. I figured if I’m going to "talk the walk" (and teach the walk!), I should probably remind my shoulders what domestic quilting feels like. It’s been a minute since I’ve had to roll a quilt like a giant burrito just to reach the middle! 🌯

It’s good for the soul (and the skill set) to get back to basics. Plus, it’s a great reminder that you don’t need a massive machine to make something beautiful—though it certainly makes the process faster!

It's a serene, sunny day out at the cabin. The kitties are thankfully all snoozing (no "helping" while I spray and pin) and the hubz is out ice-fishing so I have the floor to myself!

Another tester project underway! I love seeing what Claire (@namaju_quiltstudio) comes up each time she designs a new project 🥰

Interesting fact, I had been searching for a fun pillow project that had curves and Claire comes along with a new project to pattern test and it’s like she read my mind!

Although #UnissonQuilt is a wall hanging project, and not a pillow project that I had been searching for - it is going to be perfect at the back door - the “friends & family” entrance at the cabin. This will check off another “to do” item of camouflaging the electrical panel!

A Star Is Born (A Year Ago!): The Western Sky Star Tree Skirt! 🌟
Time for a full-disclosure confession: I totally missed posting this amazing project that I finished for Kendra last year! Oy! I must have been in the holiday longarm rush, but I am thrilled to share it now because it’s a brilliant idea!

This is the beautiful Western Sky Star Quilt pattern (@plainsandpine pattern) that Kendra cleverly planned to turn into a unique tree skirt. This quilt is so fresh and vibrant with those gorgeous pinks and greens! It just goes to show that any quilt pattern can be adapted into a stunning tree skirt!

Kendra wanted a quilting design that whispered "Christmas" without shouting it (totally my kind of vibe!). Wonderland by @sewshabbyquilting has that perfect blend of modern style and subtle, whimsical movement, which makes it absolutely ideal for a tree skirt!

It’s here! The gorgeous new pattern from my incredibly talented friend, Claire of @namaju_quiltstudio, is officially LIVE! Say hello to Evergreen Circle!

I was lucky enough to be a tester for this beautiful design (which officially makes this my eighth time testing for Claire—I'm a card-carrying super fan! 😉).

What I love most about Evergreen Circle is its magical versatility. Use classic reds and greens, and you have the perfect Christmas quilt. But swap those colours for icy blues, cozy creams, or earthy autumn tones, and you have a stunning winter or fall throw!

As always, her patterns are written so well! Clear, easy to follow with great illustrations and cutting diagrams.

For my version, I went for a textured, wintery look using a combo of my favourite fabrics: Quilters Linen and Whisper Weave. Finishing it off with flannel backing, and scrappy binding with big stitches. I loved making this quilt at the cabin, and for the cabin 🥰

Patty chose a classic and sophisticated two-tone palette of deep navy and cream, and the result is simply gorgeous.

To complement the charming, cozy feel of the piecing, I chose the "Knit 1 Purl 2" pantograph. It added the perfect textural touch, making this quilt feel even more like a warm, hand-knit masterpiece.

Carolyn's fabric choices are absolutely spot on. She used a beautiful palette of Grunge fabrics that give these whimsical critters such depth and texture. I just love how the whole scene comes together!

To ensure these cute creatures stood out, I felt that they needed a soft and complementary background texture. I finished them off with the amazing pantograph, "Pretty Little Vine," by my talented pal, Mindy (@quiltwithmindy). It adds the perfect amount of gentle movement!

My personal favourites are the cunning little squirrel (of course!) and the sweet bunny. Which forest friend catches your eye?

Cabin Office Hours: Scrappy Project In Session! 🌲
Last weekend I spent an afternoon starting a new scrappy quilt. I love scrappy everything! Scrappy bindings and backings too!

If you’re wondering how I manage the chaos of scraps, here’s my method: I always starch, press, and trim them into usable sizes, sorting them neatly into drawers. That way, when I feel inspired, I have already "paid my future self forward" and done most of the leg work! However, my "woven" scrap bin has larger scraps that haven't been cut down to any particular usable sizes, but still were pressed and starched.

For this project and these fabrics, I already had a semi-plan of what I wanted to do. So last week, I pulled Shot Cottons in deep blues, pinks, and purples and spent time cutting them all into satisfying 3.5" x 6.5" rectangles so that I would be ready for when I had some time to work on this quilt. In just an hour, I managed to get most of my strip blocks sewn together (randomly choosing 3 of one colour and 2 of another colour).

The best part about using Shot Cottons? The incredible softness! This large throw is going to be one of those quilts that just gets better and softer with every single wash.

Studio Supervisor, Libby, on Duty (aka Snooze) 😹
Just finished folding up some of my sample quilts and neatly stacked them on the cupboard... or so I thought! It took Libby, one of my official studio supervisors, all of about 30 seconds to claim them as her new, perfectly soft napping spot. Apparently, I meticulously folded and placed them there just for her royal highness!

These quilts usually serve as examples of different digital longarm designs and density for clients, but today, they're fulfilling their higher purpose: providing peak feline comfort.

Having the kitties around is always great company, and they certainly keep the studio vibes lively! (And don't worry, client quilts are always kept safely tucked away from these fluffy "helpers" until it's their moment on the longarm!)

This is the fantastic Connect the Curves (Cirque) quilt by @lorimillerdesigns. I absolutely love the fun and dynamic play of color Pam chose for the piecing—it’s pure joy!

When it came to choosing the pantograph, I wanted something that would enhance the geometric flow. I went with "Quarter" by Jess of @longarmleague. It added a beautiful texture to the background and perfectly mimicked those lovely, gentle curves in the piecing. The finished result is a quilt that’s just as much fun to look at as it is to touch!

Trading My Fishing Rod for a Needle 🎣🧵
The hubz loves to fish. When I go out with him, it's more for the scenery, keeping him company, provide yummy snacks and to unload and load up the boat. Hubz deals with the trailer end of things. If I can toot my own horn, I am pretty darn good at lining up the boat for loading!

Before the snow flies (likely this weekend!) I thought to take a gander down memory lane to one of the most perfect evenings this summer while out on the boat. The lake was glassy, the breeze was gentle, and the temperature was just right. And the sunset was amazing.

Did I actually fish? Well, barely.

Instead of reeling in a catch that evening, I was focused on a different kind of stitching! I took along the "Abricot" block to enjoy some hand-quilting (for a new pillow project) and brought a quilt to snuggle into as the sun set. It's all about prioritizing comfort and creativity!

Jocelyn made this stunning Echo Lake quilt (pattern by The Blanket Statement) using a beautiful mix of cheery solids and prints. Jocelyn created this quilt for her daughter, and we wanted the quilting to reflect that special, youthful joy. We chose the fun and whimsical pantograph "Suzy's Boho Birds" to add that perfect final touch.

The holiday quilting season is in full swing, and my longarm is buzzing with beautiful projects! As many of you are working on gifts, this is a gentle reminder to book your longarm quilting spots soon.

I am currently booking about 6 weeks out, so be sure to get your quilt tops in to guarantee a finished quilt in time for holiday gifting.

I have spots available in November and December, and binding services will continue to be available throughout the holiday rush. Call, email or text me to book your spot.

Don't have your quilt top finished yet? Book your spot now for when you will be done - this gives you a deadline to finish and gets you a spot in my lineup!

Enjoying this cool crisp Saturday morning to finish up the last bits of my hand stitching project. With a little supervision from Alice, of course. She’s never met a thread she didn’t like.

If this project/fabric looks a bit familiar, it’s mostly made of the left over bits (several huge HSTs) from one of the Uprise quilts, by Kaycee of @sewandsew.quilting.co, that I have made. I had a bit extra grey fabric and rounded it off with some scrappy white tone-on-tone FQs from my stash to (very quickly) make a 40” x 40” quilt.

I have another, much larger, project that I have been wanting to hand quilt. This was my “dip” into hand quilting beyond just big stitch binding.

I spaced out a simple wave (Good Vibrations panto) and spaced the lines 3” apart, knowing I would come in with a line of hand stitching in between each machine stitched row. I am loving the results! And, I am now ready to tackle the bigger project. But first, need to finish up the binding on this one. 😜

Bohin leather thimble
Bohin Size 6 Milliner Straw needle
See Fine Thread Gloss
Sulky Cotton 12wt thread

Ugh - photos were edited to make sure they were bright and yet….anyone have a tip on how to have that cross over when posting?
